Apr 27, 2012 · I ran an IPCONFIG and I have a IP address and I can ping the default gateway but no internet.. I check the Network and Sharing Center and it shows that my computer is connected to the wireless but has a big red X for the connection to the internet and says local access only.

Oct 21, 2008 · If it actually comes up and says local only, that usually means it did not receive an IP number from the DHCP server. The router is also the DHCP server, which means it hands out the IP numbers to connecting machines. Some setting must be wrong that it is not connecting to the router. Maybe a wireless security password or other setting. Lately, whenever I connect to the internet, my network connection icon in the bottom right hand corner of my laptop says "Access: Local only". It used to say "Access: Local and Internet". Funny thing is, I can connect and surf the internet fine. When I view the network map, the map shows no connection to the internet.
